In 1952, a crew of 25 brave souls left Great Britain for the Arctic. As members of the British North Greenland Expedition (BNGE), their task was to survey one of the most inhospitable environments on Earth for two years — in temperatures that often dropped as low as -87ºF.

As the scientists, soldiers and medical personnel conducted their research, they were equipped with specialized gear developed for their time on the ice: i.e. Oyster Prince watches from Tudor.

Exactly 70 years to the day after this fateful expedition left for the frozen north, Tudor reissued its beloved Ranger. Launched in loving homage to these utilitarian, time-only tools from the mid-20th century, the watches draw upon vintage 1960s versions for inspiration.

A Handsome Update to a Classic Model

Building upon the long lineage of Oyster Prince models from decades past, the new Tudor Ranger reference M79950 is a timepiece that promises everything one needs, and nothing one doesn’t.

Housed in a 39mm, satin-brushed stainless steel case with a smooth bezel, signed screw-down crown and domed sapphire crystal, it boasts a round black dial graced with the mix of Arabic and dash indices that has come to define many famed, time-only tool watches built for exploration. Ample Super-LumiNova coats these indices as well as the unique “shovel” handset that marks the Ranger line, making for a highly legible design that’s easily visible high on a mountaintop, low in a valley — or anywhere else on earth.

Unlike the 20th century’s Rangers, this new reference M79950 is powered by an in-house movement. The automatic, chronometer-certified Tudor Manufacture Calibre MT5402 boasts a 70 hour power reserve and bi-directional winding system. What’s more, the watch is available on one of three impressive bracelets: A stainless steel three-link bracelet with a folding clasp and Tudor’s “T-fit” safety catch, a green fabric strap with red and beige stripes and buckle; or a hybrid rubber and leather strap complete with a folding clasp and steel safety catch. However one chooses to wear it, the well-sized Ranger is comfortable and versatile, with 100m of water resistance.
