Want to Buy a Camper Van? Here Are the Brands You Need to Know

Europeans and Aussies get many of the best camper vans. But there are still some great options you can buy in the United States.

Camper vans may be the ultimate recreational vehicles. They offer the maneuverability of a passenger car (or close to it) paired with many of the comforts typically found in travel trailers or full-blown motorhomes. Not surprisingly, #vanlife has become a popular movement, whether it's Instagram-friendly weekend explorations or converting to a full-blown alternative, off-the-grid lifestyle. And recent events have made that #vanlife fantasy feel especially poignant.

Many camper vans we feature don't come to the U.S. The modern equivalent of the classic VW model, tantalizingly named The California, only gets sold in Europe, and only Aussies can snag this badass, off-roading Toyota van with Land Cruiser bits. But there are still several excellent options available if you're looking to buy a camper van in the U.S.

Here, we've pulled together some of our favorite camper van options from major manufacturers and independent builders, as well as provided some advice on how to make the best choices.

How to Rent a Camper Van

Vanlife influencer Summer Ginther recommends “renting a van before jumping all in! This way, you can decide if this lifestyle is a good fit for you before making a large investment. Also, it allows you to get a feel of what van and amount of space will work best for your needs.”

Peer-to-peer marketplaces like RVShare and Outdoorsy make the campervan rental process safe and easy. You can also check out our complete guide to renting a camper van for more in-depth info.

                                                        Vanlife: Advice from the Experts

                                                        Cultivate your hobbies

Isabelle and Antoine from Far Out Ride are big fans of the Ford Transit, having a 2016 high-roof/extended-length trim as well as their newest build, which is a 2021 model. They began their builds with hobbies and passions at the top of their minds. While living out of a van can get boring in some ways, if you put effort into a build that will support the things that keep your travels interesting, you will be a lot more likely to succeed.

                                                        Far Out Ride

The couple simply advises you to “get a hobby that will complement your travels: hiking, mountain biking, skiing, surfing, photography, whatever. Sightseeing the popular tourist attractions gets old at some point, while your favorite hobby will take you off the beaten track and bring excitement to your journey.” These hobbies will play heavily into what spaces you will need within your van.

In addition to this broader idea, they have fallen in love with the modern amenities that have been included in their build, such as their off-the-grid electrical system, running water, hot shower, toilet, fridge and gas heater, but their biggest winner is a composting toilet that they could to “draw the line between van camping and van living!” And what is most impressive is how they were able to document each of these upgrades so that people who are interested in doing a DIY build can do the same.

Don't set your expectations too high

Summer Ginther, who has had her 2016 Ram ProMaster 2500 for four years, says, “People often have too high of expectations and think every day will be filled with beautiful window views and lazing around in the sun. The reality is sometimes you’re parked in a Walmart parking lot, not mountainside. A majority of the people I’ve met who live in a van still work full time, so although there might be more free time, there is still a lot of regular daily life involved.”

                                                        Don't overthink your campervan build

Experience is going to be the only thing to make your build perfect. After talking to Max Bidstrup, we learned about his many vans over the years.

“I bought Cass in 2020. I have put over 50,000 miles on her since then as I have seen most of Australia in that time. I bought my first van (a VW Caddy Maxi) in 2011 and self converted it into a 'weekender camper' so I could have my own beach house down at the surf in between my paramedic shifts. Then I bought a Mercedes Sprinter when I moved to Canada in 2017. That was my first really extensive conversion and along with my partner at the time, Lee and my dog Occy (who I had flown over from Australia) we lived and traveled in it from Canada all the way down to Patagonia at the base of South America over the course of two years. We also bought another van in early 2019 for a few months of travel whilst back visiting Australia, which some people may remember as Kangablue!”

So if nothing else, know there is always an opportunity to change your build. He also emphasized that when you overthink each part of the build, down to the millimeter, your stress will take over all the fun that comes along with it. Nothing is forever, and you can always switch things up as you become more experienced.

Factors to Consider When Building a Custom Camper Van

Amenities: How are going to use the camper van? What features do you need to accomplish that goal? What you need for the weekend “get away from it all” trips will differ from trying to live completely off-the-grid. What sort of toilet and indoor/shower setup facilities do you need?

Build Time: Build times for a custom camper van can vary from several weeks to several months. And the most popular builders will have waitlists before they can even get to your build.

Materials: You want your camper van to be durable. Like with your physical home, that means using quality materials. That may cost more at the outset but it may end up saving you in the long run.

Size: How many people are going to be camping? Where are you going to store it? Is your HOA going to throw a fit if it doesn’t fit in a standard garage? Do you need to be able to stand inside of it?

Transparency: Building a custom camper van isn’t cheap. The van alone can cost north of $50,000. The more features, customization and craftsmanship that goes into it, the more expensive the van will be on the back end. Make sure the pricing structure is upfront, clear and itemized before committing.
