Editor’s Note: Watches & Wonders (formerly SIHH) has moved online and Baselworld 2020 is canceled, but that hasn’t stopped watch brands large and small from debuting their new wares. Stay on top of this year’s best new watch releases here.

There’s a lot more going on behind the dial of this masterfully designed dress watch than you would think. Bauhaus luminary Max Bill’s timeless watch design, which German brand Junghans has been producing since 1961, now quietly hides state-of-the-art solar charging.

While Junghans continues to produce mechanical watches, they’re also one of the few European watchmakers to invest in developing their own digital technology: Across various collections, watches with the designation “Mega” use radio signals to synch the seconds hand to a time signal 1,440 times per day. The watches also offer world time synchronization via a smartphone app. This, combined with the brand’s solar charging technology, makes the Mega watches incredibly useful for the modern traveler.

Each of these features has existed previously in Junghans watches, but the newest models apply them to the flagship Max Bill collection. Notably, the solar cells are hidden, offering the clean, tasteful design that the brand is most known for rather than something that feels like a gadget. A lightweight titanium 38mm x 9mm case makes for an even more practical, comfortable and technical-feeling wearing experience.

The Junghans Max Bill Mega Solar is available in several dial designs and case finishes and with several strap options, with prices starting at around $966 on a strap and reaching about $1,050 on a bracelet. The watches are available through Junghans retailers.
