Much like with other G-Shock lines in recent years, the brand’s Frogman is now the latest to be updated with an analog dial. It’s still an ISO-rated, professional-focused dive watch with the distinctive lopsided case fans know and love — and as a new model, it features all the latest tech from the brand as well. The analog hands, however, aren’t just for the sake of looks, but are justified by a unique function meant specifically for use while diving.
This might seem like a similar approach to, say, that taken with the most recent Mudmaster with analog hands, but here’s what’s unique to the Frogman GWF-A1000: The quartz movement that powers it incorporates a new module developed specifically for tracking dive times. When activated, the hour and minute hands align and overlap to visually form a single minute hand that can be used to track decompression stops. (A sub-display continues to display the main time.) When out of the water, a similar feature will log surface intervals, and the user can easily synch with a smartphone to log the the dives as well.
G-Shock purists might prefer models that are true to brand’s digital roots and the strengths that make G-Shock unique, but the use of analog hands is well-justified here. Plus, the watch includes tons of Casio tech, from its myriad digital functions to multiple censors, smartphone connection and Tough Solar charging. Further, its resin case uses G-Shock’s new carbon fiber-reinforced structure inside, making an already super tough watch more robust than ever.
Consistent with existing Frogman watches, the GWF-A1000 is rated water-resistant to 200m and measures around 53mm wide with an extra-long strap meant to fit around a dive suit sleeve. As a relatively premium, professional-oriented G-Shock, the Frogman will be available in the US from mid-June 2020 for a price of $800.
