The two groups of enthusiasts who get closest to the pollution in our oceans are, arguably, surfers and divers. So it makes sense that Breitling, a company that makes some of the world’s best diving watches, and Outerknown, the sustainable clothier that lists surfer Kelly Slater as a cofounder, would want to work together to champion conservation.
Today, the two companies announced their joint effort, a very blue take on Breitling’s Superocean Héritage II Chronograph that features a strap made from Econyl. If you’re not familiar, Econyl is made from regenerated nylon captured from the sea, effectively taking things like old scraps of fishing nets out of the environment and making them into new and useful products. The NATO, which bears the Outerknown logo, marks the first time Breitling has used recycled materials in a strap.
“As strange as it sounds, the beach is, in effect, my office, so I am confronted with pollution on a daily basis,” Slater said in a statement. “I will do whatever I can to help keep the world’s beaches and oceans clean, and I’m thrilled that with the Superocean Héritage II Chronograph 44 Outerknown model, Breitling is helping raise awareness of the problem and showing how individuals can help.”
The thoroughly considered watch is a vote for removing waste from the oceans, but it’s also a good-looking tool watch. Its lumed dot and hour and minute hands emit a blue light in the dark instead of the traditional green, and its artful combination of navy and black set it apart from other, very stainless steel watches. It’s recognizably Breitling, but the Outerknown considerations make it different enough to help it stand out from the rest of the pack.
