If you need an excuse to check out Oris’s attractive new dive watches, cleaning up the oceans and saving blue whales seems like a good one. Following the first two watches in the brand’s “Ocean Trilogy” released at Baselworld 2019, the final member is the new Oris Aquis Chronograph Blue Whale dive watch, and it’s only available as part of the set. The three watches come in a colorful box made of recycled plastic bottles, and the campaign helps emphasize Oris’s support of ocean conservation charities, with the new chronograph specifically made in partnership with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation.
The first two watches in the “trilogy” were the Aquis Clean Ocean and the Great Barrier Reef III, both limited-edition variations of the popular Aquis dive watch line and featuring the same pleasing “aqua blue” gradient dial. The new chronograph, however, is interesting because it introduces a new form for the Aquis Chronograph with a symmetrical 3-6-9 arrangement for its sub-dials — other such dive watches have used the comparatively lopsided 6-9-12 layout associated with popular movements like the Valjoux 7750. Providing this balanced-looking layout and a 48-hour power reserve is the Sellita SW500-1 automatic chronograph movement.
With a 45.5mm-wide case in steel on a bracelet and 500m of water-resistance, this is going to be one serious-feeling and hefty dive watch. The case back is solid with limited-edition engravings and a blue whale motif. The Oris Aquis Chronograph Blue Whale is being produced in a limited run of just 200 pieces and will be available, again, only as part of the Ocean Trilogy box set that includes the other two Aquis watches in a box made from recycled bottles for a price of $10,500.
