Your personal Netflix profile is pretty important. It keeps track of the shows and movies you've watched and gives you recommendations based on that data. And since you've likely had a Netflix profile for years, it has a pretty good idea of your likes and dislikes.

You might have heard that Netflix is doing a bit of a crackdown on password sharing. As of May 2023, Netflix announced that it's going to be more diligent about automatically signing people out of accounts if it deems they aren't in the same household membership. This means if you've been mooching off somebody's membership, it's likely gotten a lot more annoying to watch Netflix.

There is some good news. This week, Netflix announced a new feature called "Profile Transfer" that allows you to keep your Netflix profile and transition it to another account. It can be your own Netflix membership or you somebody else's (say you move in with a new roommate or significant other). Basically, you won't lose all those hard-earned hours of streaming. The catch, you'll likely have to start

In an announcement for the feature, Timi Kosztin, Netflix's product manager for product innovation, wrote: "People move. Families grow. Relationships end. But throughout these life changes, your Netflix experience should stay the same. Today, we’re launching Profile Transfer, a feature that lets people using your account transfer a profile — keeping the personalized recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and other settings — when they start their own membership."

How to transfer your Netflix profile over to a new account

If you're looking to transfer your Netflix profile to a new or an existing account, you need to do so online — you can't do it via the Netflix app on your TV or streaming box. You also need to know the sign-in information of the Netflix account that you're transferring away from as well as the one you're transferring to.

  1. Open www.Netflix.com in a web browser.
  2. Sign into the account where your Netflix profile currently lives.
  3. Scroll over the Account page located in the top-right corner.
  4. In the drop-down menu, select Transfer Profile.
  5. Select the profile you want to transfer.
  6. Select "Transfer."
  7. Select "Start Profile Transfer."

From here, you'll have the option of selecting where you want your Netflix profile to be transferred to: a new account or an existing account.
