Porsche is going all-in on electric cars — 911 excepted. Perhaps the biggest testament to the company's commitment is the next generation of the Macan SUV, Porsche's best-selling vehicle, going all-electric. But according to Automotive News, the combustion Macan may receive a protracted stay of execution.
Porsche may rethink its decision to axe the combustion Macan
Porsche is expected to keep the combustion Macan around for a bit alongside the EV as buyers make the transition. The initial intention was to kill off the combustion Macan in 2025 or 2026. But Porsche reportedly told its U.S. dealers it could revisit that decision depending on how sales go. We could see the combustion Macan linger around closer to 2030.
We still aren't getting an all-new combustion Macan
The Macan is getting up there in years; the current generation entered production in February 2014. But it's quite likely the combustion Macan Porsche sells will be a facelifted version of the current model rather than an all-new update. Even if the current generation lives on, the second generation will almost undoubtedly be all-electric.
Porsche keeping the combustion Macan in play shouldn't be too surprising
Porsche is preparing for the future like most other automakers. But it's still a business looking to increase its profit margins while selling more cars in the near term. It's tough to see how Porsche would do that in the next few years without offering a combustion Macan.
When will the electric Porsche Macan arrive?
Hopefully soon. Porsche has provided teasers and a technical preview of the new Macan. But the new EV has reportedly been delayed by VW Group software issues until 2024 at the earliest.
